Details of experience:

Geoffrey Geringer, a 69-year-old resident of the neighborhood, was admitted to our community on July 30, 2025, following bilateral carpal tunnel release surgeries at Lenox Hill Hospital. He chose The Riverside due to his familiarity with the area and confidence in our reputation for excellent care. Geoffrey remained with us for 40 days, until his safe discharge home on September 8, 2025.

Admission and First Impressions

Prior to hospitalization, Geoffrey experienced numbness, decreased strength, and limited range of motion in both hands, which left him with little to no functional ability. He struggled with completing activities of daily living (ADLs) such as dressing, hygiene, and toileting, often requiring moderate assistance. When he arrived at The Riverside, he was still groggy from the second of his two surgeries, but immediately felt reassured by the environment and warm reception. Geoffrey was welcomed into a freshly prepared room with a thoughtful welcome gift and an informational packet awaiting him. Within his first 48 hours, he met with his social worker, nursing staff, dietitian, concierge, and both occupational and physical therapists, which set the tone for a collaborative and supportive rehabilitation journey.

Rehabilitation Journey

Geoffrey’s rehabilitation began with a period of non-weight-bearing (NWB) status on each hand following surgery. His therapy plan was designed to address both fine and gross motor function, focusing on gradually restoring strength, coordination, and independence. With the guidance of his therapy team, Geoffrey participated in targeted exercises to regain his range of motion (ROM) and hand strength.

His progress was remarkable. By discharge, Geoffrey had achieved full ROM and strength in both hands, allowing him to independently perform ADLs that had previously required assistance. He described therapy sessions as the highlight of his days and credited his two primary therapists, Milaud and Christian, for their exceptional support and encouragement throughout the process.

Interdisciplinary Care and Daily Experience

An entire interdisciplinary team supported Geoffrey’s recovery. He recognized his aide for her constant helpfulness and warm smile and praised his two main nurses for providing attentive, 24-hour nursing care. He also highlighted the dietitian, who customized his meals, describing the food as consistently gourmet in quality.

Beyond clinical care, Geoffrey appreciated the attentiveness of the Unit Clerk, who kept his floor running smoothly, as well as his social worker and concierge, both of whom helped ensure his daily comfort and a smooth transition toward discharge.

Discharge and Outlook

After 40 days at The Riverside, Geoffrey was discharged home, having regained independence and confidence. He was able to perform all self-care activities without assistance and left with a renewed sense of strength and optimism.

Patient Reflection

Geoffrey shared his experience in a public Google review, writing: “A great place to recover after my surgeries. The place was clean, comfortable, and secure. When my brother-in-law, a surgeon, visited, he observed how clean both the public and private spaces were and said that as an MD, he knew how important that was. Thanks (Lloyd)!!! The staff were competent, caring, and professional. A special shoutout to my main aide, Kaitlyn, who was always helpful and always had a bright, warm smile on her face. There was 24-hour nursing on the floor, led by my two main nurses, Maya and Lydia, both terrific! The food was consistently gourmet quality, individually tailored to each resident by an on-site dietician. I was fortunate to have a great rehab team working with me, led by my very excellent two main therapists, Milaud and Christian. On the days that I had therapy, it was the highlight of my day there. I want to mention Marie, who did a great job of taking care of my floor and making things run so well. I also want to mention my social worker, Alvan, and my concierge, Beatrice, both of whom did such a great job of taking care of me. Most importantly, if someone is in need of rehab, they will have made the right choice if they pick this place to go to. If they have friends or loved ones at this facility, they can rest assured that those people are in excellent, caring hands!”
