How did this patient hear about the Riverside? Hospital Social Worker

Arthur, a retired high school math teacher, was admitted to Mount Sinai West on January 10, 2020 for a fall in his kitchen. Following surgery to repair his left femur, his doctor recommended rehabilitation at a skilled nursing and rehabilitation center.  Arthur was anxious about this because he and his wife were making plans to travel on a cruise February 28, 2020 to New Orleans. After his wife researched skilled nursing providers in NYC, she suggested The Riverside.

On January 17, 2020 Arthur was welcomed to The Riverside with the goal of being able to walk out of the community without assistance. He wanted to return to “cruising the world with nothing stopping him,” shared Arthur. The Interdisciplinary team visited with him on his first day to complete their comprehensive evaluations and to discuss his care plan.

Physical and occupational therapy created a custom tailored program in order to ensure Arthur would be able to participate in therapy while his left leg continued to heal.  Over the course of the next two weeks, the physical therapy department supervised Arthur and his transfers, monitoring his independence with transferring to and from bed. Arthur returned to Mount Sinai West for a follow-up visit with his physician. He was very pleased to see his progress and lifted Arthur’s non-weight bearing status. Arthur was looking forward to continuing his rehabilitation journey, including personal hygiene tasks such as toileting and showering. This determined teacher was a great student and re-learning the fine skills of walking once again.

As his discharge date grew near, Arthur was able to independently walk over 100 feet with his walker. His weight tolerance on his left leg improved and he was able to ambulate without pain. On February 28th, 2020, Arthur was discharged home!  The team at The Riverside wishes Arthur much success and health as he sails the seas with his beloved wife.
